Support for the Karrayyu pastoralist of Ethiopia

Close to 50,000 of Karrayyu children, men and women suffer from drought and are in immediate need of life saving humanitarian assistance. Currently, the UN estimates that up to seven million people in Ethiopia need humanitarian assistance. Karrayyu are physically next door to Afar region where spillover of the war has destroyed the livelihood of people.
The Karrayyu Oromo are one of the last remaining Pastoralist groups in the upper Awash Valley of Ethiopia in the Oromia region. Since the 1950s, the Karrayyu lost over 65 percent of their ancestral land because of the sugarcane plantations and ‘conservation,’ whereby both developments have never contributed to their livelihoods as of today. The Karrayyu were deliberately left in the small corridor of land where they usually graze during the wet seasons. Today they become climate refugees because of the recurrent drought, COVI-19 isolating them. Furthermore, conflict from the neighboring ethnic group is treating them to risk their small left-over land.
· 3 water boreholes in Fantalle district will be rehabilitated, and community will have clean drinking water, for themselves and animals.
· 3 Schools will be rehabilitated and feeding program (lunch) will start. This will prevent high rate of school dropout of hundreds of pastoralist kids
In total, 20,000 children, 12,000 men and 17,000 women will benefit from your assistance. We the Karrayyu children will commence delivering assistance in December in collaboration with community leaders this year and plans to have everything implemented by May 2022.
