Gowaan Gals started as two mates having fun on bikes. Both Martha Gill and myself, Bex Baraona , were racing enduro mountain bikes all around the world at the time and hoping to have a lucky break to make it our jobs.
A few people had said we were like a double act, have a good vibe and should start an Instagram page - so that we did! From the early days we just posted loads of silly videos of both Martha and I trying new things on our bikes (usually crashing or bailing) but above all, having a proper good laugh at the same time!
This is the vibe we now love to share with others in hope to inspire more people to ride bikes or try new things on them.
We are both now full time athletes, racing the Enduro World Series supported by Marin Bikes (Martha) & Ibis Cycles (Bex). When we aren't racing we put all our time and effort into Gowaan. We are building the brand with hope that after racing we can devote all our time to it and put on some amazing events, courses etc and make opportunities for others.
2019 saw us run a women MTB Festival, it was a huge success and I must admit pretty scary to organise and deliver with zero experience and zero funds! But it came together and the feedback and seeing everyone shred at the festival made all those laptop hours worthwhile for us!
Some of the things we currently do:
-Quarterly Ride Outs (free of charge and everyone welcome)
-Festival
-Attend multiple events with our merch stall & freebies
2020 is seeing us take under our wing some ambassadors, some young up and coming riders that we feel suit the brand, share the same passion and could thrive with a bit of guidance. We are in the process of selection and have an 'Gowaan Experience Day' in Feb 2020 to meet the applicants that made it to round 2 of the application process (we had heaps apply and loved reading the applications!).
We have big ideas for Gowaan, here are some of the things we want to do in the future, when finances allow:
-Spring Festival as well as the current September Festival
-Kids Cycle Summer Camp
-MTB Coaching
-Guided Rides
-Ambassador Development Days
-Have a base, a HQ.
Right now, with racing and the media work we currently do, 1 festival a year is us nearly maxed out. We would like to be able to get an extra pair of hands to help us run the behind the scenes parts of the brand (a lot of paperwork/emails go on with organising events and running a business). We run Gowaan Gals as a not-for-profit organisation and always looking for ways to bring money in so that we can do more to get people riding bikes, sharing the love and giving it a go!
