Support The Dever Family

Donation protected
Hey, everyone this is Shelly Asher and Barry Retherford.

My heart is so heavy right now thinking about a great friend of ours, Randy Dever. Barry Retherford and I have decided we want to help Randy and his wife, Linda.  There are many of us feeling helpless and just want to do something to help Randy, Linda, and the Dever family through a horrible situation. We feel we can make a difference, if only just a little.

During this day and age, so many people have been affected by covid. Covid has hit the Dever family especially hard.

Randy’s story:

Randy began to feel ill a few days after Christmas. He thought he had the flu, and after several days of no improvement, he went to the ER.  On Jan. 7th, he was admitted into the hospital. He remained there over a week, taking breathing treatments, and was intubated on Jan 16th, 2021.

Covid has damaged Randy’s lungs. He has experienced many struggles with stabilizing his blood pressure, heart rate fluctuating, and oxygen levels dropping. He was on 100% oxygen for several weeks. He had a blood clot in his leg. Doctors were monitoring the clot to make sure he did not throw a smaller blood clot into his lungs.

Randy fought the vent while sedated. For his own good, doctors placed Randy in a medically induced coma to try proning him. After proning a couple of times, he developed air pockets outside his lungs, and proning as a means of improving lung function was no longer a possibility. Doctors did not want to leave him on the ventilator for longer than 3 weeks. He is still on the ventilator, 4 weeks later.

He was moved Feb. 11th to Seton, a long term care facility. The staff at Seton will be providing him some physical therapy and placing a trachea. He will be transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital sometime this upcoming week to have the trachea and a feeding tube placed, along with a possible midline. He currently has a picc line. Because Randy’s neck is short, the staff at Seton want the procedures done surgically at St. Vincent’s for his safety.

The near future entails slowly weaning Randy from sedation once the trachea is placed. Once sedation is weaned, the doctors will get a glimpse of Randy’s neurological state.

Linda has been by his side since Randy was intubated. She has not been willing to leave his side other than to make a few trips back and forth to home. Our heart breaks for she and Randy and their families. The roller coaster she has been on is one no one wants to ride.

Randy and Linda have a long road ahead with lots of medical bills, traveling back and forth, and rehab. Randy will continue to be at Seton for the next several months. She has been told the process will be long and slow. Randy may never be the same as he was before Covid. We want to help Linda alleviate any stress she is experiencing, even if only a little. Any amount you donate will assist the family in providing the best care for Randy’s recovery, including to help Linda to continue to be by his side.
