Support The Black Syllabus Start-Up Fund!

Hello everyone! My name is Folasade Adesanya and I am the founder of The Black Syllabus. This fundraiser will support start-up/operational costs & will allow us to hire part time Operations Manager to improve efficiency and allow us to get back to promoting our programs.
The Black Syllabus is a 501c3 organization committed to promoting literacy and higher education in the Black community, as well as amplifying Black narratives and research. We provide resources for and reward scholars of color actively engaging with Black literature and/or higher education. We believe diverse Black voices should be central in the movement toward transformative justice, and work in solidarity with other marginalized communities working toward uprooting systems of injustice.
We are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish as an organization so far. A few highlights include a fundraiser I created in support of Marcus Books to keep their doors from closing due to the pandemic. In creating & promoting this fundraiser, we were able to assist Marcus Books in raising over $260k and counting! Through The Black Scholarship program, we were also able to raise over $2,000 for two college scholarships awarded in Fall 2020. In addition to relaunching The Black Scholarship and The Black Stories Reading Challenge, we hope to be able to launch The Black Scholars Program, a series of teach-ins, webinars, and other online courses hosted by folks in the literary community with expertise in various topics related to literacy and academia in the Black community, particularly as it relates to transformative justice.
Those of you who have been following us for a while know that we took a hiatus starting August 2020 in order to focus our efforts toward establishing The Black Syllabus as a 501c3 non-profit organization. The purpose of obtaining the 501c3 was primarily so that we could continue to fundraising for The Black Scholarship and The Black Stories Reading Challenge tax-free, in addition to being able to increase our reach, impact, and obtain support for future programming. We’re excited to finally be able to announce that The Black Syllabus was determined a 501c3 by the IRS in March 2021! This has been a long time coming, and we’re very excited to be able to move forward with fundraising and programming.
I currently manage all aspects of this nonprofit on my own, with support & guidance from my small board of directors. I am starting a PhD program this Fall and will need to hire part-time help to assist with all aspects of operations & administration, fundraising & grant writing, and re-launching our programs. We hope to be able to hire a part-time Operations Manager to start, followed by a Program Manager, so that we don’t have to slow down or pause our efforts while I pursue my PhD.
Please note that these funds are going directly toward internal operation costs, primarily salary.
