Support Tom & his stroke recovery

On Wednesday, February 26, 2020, Tom, a beloved father, husband, son, and friend of so many, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. Two surgeries have been performed. The first one that same evening to evacuate the blood clot, and a second the next day on February 27th to perform a decompressive craniectomy where the surgeon removes a portion of the skull to allow room for the brain to swell in order to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP). After a stroke, damaged brain cells typically swell and can prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from leaving the brain, driving the pressure even higher. A drain was also installed during the second surgery to drain the fluid from the brain to attack this swelling from both ends. Doctors say both the craniectomy and the drain are doing their job. Tom is currently under very good care in ICU at Dell Seton in Austin and being treated for brain trauma. He is currently not awake but is responding to some stimuli from the medical staff during routine neurological checks and we believe he is responding to Julie’s voice and touch.
We do not fully understand yet the long term effects that this event will have on his future physical and mental capabilities. In the immediate future, we expect that he will be transferred to an inpatient neurological rehabilitation facility nearby. The reality is that his stroke recovery will be a long and complex process.
One can only imagine how devastating this has been for Julie, Tom and their extended family. Tom and Julie's closest friends have started this GoFundMe Campaign to help them with medical expenses and general financial support (mortgage, bills, school expenses, groceries, etc.) as he recovers. We anticipate his long-term medical expenses will surpass this initial financial goal, but we are hopeful that this campaign will alleviate some of their financial burden so he can recover with minimal stress.
