Let me tell you about Brian and Debbie Hickey. These two amazing and selfless people have been married for nine years and are/were both long serving employees of Sydney Trains. Most importantly though they are Grandparents to four beautiful babies that they have been fighting to give a better life to for over many years!
Emma (6)
Alyssa (5)
Kye (4)
Mia (3)
These innocent children have lived tough lives in the short time they have all been here. They have been in and out of the care of their parents due to severe drug use and family/domestic violence. Every time Debbie and Brian have moved heaven and earth to be there for their Grandchildren, who live over 10 hours away in QLD. They have fought endlessly to help their Grandchildren and they are in the position now where they are doing it all again.
Back in 2016 Debbie and Brian took Emma, Alyssa and Kye into their care (Mia wasn't born at the time) due to concerns for their safety at home. The three children arrived with one laundry basket of clothes between them, Debbie and Brian had to buy everything and start from scratch as parents to three young children. The children were with Debbie and Brian for two years, in and out of court where ultimately federal court ordered that their parents had met all requirements to have the children returned to them. Debbie and Brian were devastated. They spent two years fighting for and caring for their Grandchildren and they were going back to a life of instability. During the two years court costs alone were $70,000
The children went back to the their parents who in the meantime had had their fourth child, Mia. They stayed with their parents for two years before things deteriorated again. The emotional rollercoaster ensued where Debbie and Brian were constantly worried about their Grandchildren. Where there would be times they were allowed to see them and times where the children's parents would cut them off and they would have no access to them for months at a time. Things started to rapidly go down hill when their parents relapsed. Debbie and Brian managed to get two of their Grandchildren before Family and Community Services stepped in and they are currently with them full time. Family and Community Services stepped in to removed the remaining two children in November 2020. Due to Covid and border closures the two terrified children went into care for two weeks before going into their care of Debbie's Son and Daughter in Law who live in QLD which is where they currently are.
The children are currently all living in different places, separated from each other and Debbie and Brian are doing everything they can to bring all four children into their care. Debbie and Brian want nothing more than for the suffering of their Grandchildren to finally end.
They are about to head to court to fight for full custody of Emma and Kye so that their parent's can't just come and take them. They will then head back to court to do the same and fight to have Alyssa and Mia brought down from QLD and to have full custody of them too. It has been estimated that the court costs this time will be up around $32,000. This will mean throughout this whole ordeal Debbie and Brian would have spent over $100,000 just in legal fees alone!
Debbie has already had to give up work to basically become a full time Mother to the two children that are already in her care, with two more hopefully on their way very soon. The children all require ongoing professional counselling and intervention for behavioural and anger issues caused by the traumatic events in their lives. The emotional and financial burden on this beautiful couple is unfathomable. Debbie and Brian are doing everything they can to cover all these additional expenses but it's becoming way too much. They are looking in to withdrawing their super to be able to fight to become parents to four children when they should be getting close to retiring. Their whole lives are changing and the costs to get their Grandchildren will only be the beginning.
Anyone that knows Debbie and Brian knows they will never ask for help themselves but they have a lot of family and friends that love them and we can't let them go through this without helping as much as we can. I have set up this GoFundMe to try and help them in any way we can.
Every little bit will help them with the court costs to win the battle to get their Grandchildren and the ongoing cost to provide them with a life full of love, stability and security that every child deserves.
On behalf of Debbie and Brian, we appreciate any contribution you can make no matter the amount
