Dear friends,
Stephen Merils is a 45 year old husband, son, uncle, and brother with a zest for life. In July of this year, his life, and that of his family, drastically changed when he was given the grim diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer that has spread to his liver. Surgery is not an option due to the advanced stage. Steve shares his story in the hopes that it will prompt others to get tested. Early detection is the key to success. Often, as was the case here, doctors did not consider cancer early on due to his age. You need to push your GP if you have symptoms.
Stephen believes in giving back and is an active member of the Ottawa community. He is the Secretary for a local chapter of a worldwide charity.
Stephen is pulling out all the stops in terms of treatment and beating cancer. His wife Andrea plans to keep him around for many years to come. She has been instrumental in seeking out natural treatments that work in conjunction with the conventional treatment of chemotherapy. He has drastically changed what he eats and follows a plant based diet that includes healthy juices. There are a lot of great treatment options out there that aren't yet recognized by conventional medicine and provincial healthcare. Therefore, the costs of these treatments are not covered by provincial health care system or private insurance.
