Support South County Pride!

Tax deductible
The South County Pride Foundation (SCPF) is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ pride in south county. We strive to honor those who paved the road before us, and acknowledge our BIPOC siblings in and outside our community. SCPF is all inclusive, and hopes to inspire youth to speak out against hate and injustice in our community.

In 2020, a South Kingstown high school sophomore Magnolia Longworth posted in the “Our Town: South Kingstown” Facebook group asking if anyone would be interested in recognizing Pride month by participating in a car parade. This would be a safe way to celebrate Pride month in light of the Covid pandemic. Approximately 15 cars participated in the parade which was loop through Wakefield. People dressed in Pride colors and decorated their cars for the event.

The following year, Magnolia partnered with Evan Travis to expand the event beyond the car parade. They partnered with the Wakefield Village Association and held the car parade and a Pride celebration in conjunction with the first Riverfire of the season.

The event was a huge success. As a result, Magnolia and Evan were fueled to see that it continues after they both graduate high school. Magnolia decided to do her senior project to see that this happens by creating the South County Pride Foundation. The foundation’s current board consists of both Magnolia and Evan, along with Sarah LeClair, Amelia Ortega, Lou Chrostowski and Doug Shapiro.

The support from local businesses has been great and continues to grow. Partnering with the Wakefield Village Association’s Ken Burke and Michelle Sansevero, Christopher Simpson and Tammy Brown from the Contemporary Theater, and Ken Tetzner of Phil’s Restaurant created last year’s success. In addition to them, we are fortunate to have the South County Chamber of Commerce, South County Hospital and Rock Spot taking active roles to make this year’s event a greater success.

Funds raised will be used to support our annual Pride celebration and continued community outreach and education.
