On Monday, March 16th, 2020, we had to suddenly close our door to our Small family business, Anytime Fitness Duarte, for the 1st time in 5 years. My husband and I have worked in the gym for the last 4 years and have recently become the new owners as of December 2019. The COVID-19 virus has had a devastating effect on our society, our economy and our way of life because of the global pandemic it has caused. Government mandates have demanded the closure of our business. People have been ordered to stay home and shelter in place throughout Los Angeles County. The unforeseen current pandemic crisis and resulting public health orders are together seriously affecting our Anytime Fitness business operations and its sales have plummeted over the past several weeks. We are looking at this as a loss of over $60,000 plus in revenue
We had hopes of opening back up to the public on April 1st, 2020, this is no longer the case and is ever-changing. With orders from not only our STATE of beautiful CALIFORNIA But LA COUNTY as well, As of March 19th, 11:59 pm orders for LA County were extended another few weeks to April 20th, 2020 and as the looks of it, even into May 2020.
Due to the current circumstances, and under our franchisor procedures, we will have to adjust current memberships to be frozen and/or canceled upon request. We are optimistic about retaining most of our membership base, but know that due to current crises, we will lose a few members, and all membership dues will be frozen for the month of March and April. With matters out of hands, we understand we are all in this together and are all hurting financially. Our members come 1st, and we are glad to help those who request to freeze or cancel the account. But it hurts not only a small family business but also the families it supports. Because of the memberships being frozen, this will make it impossible to pay the current lease payment, payroll, and other aspects of owning/running the gym as is.
We’ve requested deferment of payment to the end of our lease for April and May's payment, as we look forward to opening in late April, but also be prepared to extend to May as the pandemic is ever-changing. They are so far not keen on helping us, or others in our plaza during this time.
We are first-time business owners and do not have the means to hire an attorney, only to seek some council. We have also applied for assistance through the SBA and multiple other resources available through the state, and federally. We also filed a claim for business interruption with our insurance company. But so far nothing…
As we are more than happy to do what’s right and stay home & healthy, but take part in being a good global citizen, this hurts us tremendously. This order and mandate does not permit us to operate our business under normal circumstances. Our gym relies on membership subscriptions, personal training and group training, as well as new revenue from new members and clients.
This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right thing to do. As new owners barely 2 months, this is terrifying. This is our only means of income and most of your funds are dedicated to this gym and its success. As a couple, we don’t have a fancy car and only have one vehicle. We’ve yet to buy a home, living humbly in a tiny modest place. We’ve yet to start a family because we are responsibly trying to secure a stable future. We don’t shop for much of anything and rarely reward ourselves. This is hard because of our sacrifices and recent investment into creating a legacy, and healthier place for our community.
We’ve met an uncontrollable challenge that is beyond anyone’s control by putting others' health and safety first. We know this is a concern for members and our staff. And we need your help, NOW. Please share what you can to help us continue to make healthy happen for our members and clients.
Members, please continue to pay those Monthly Dues. It helps us keep the pulse on not only our facility but also our staff. Keeping them on payroll helps us provide you all with Daily Workouts on our “Members only Private Facebook”, it also allows us to stay connected to you virtually! It provides some sort of stable income during this crazy time!

This being temporary help during this time, this is on behalf of not only us but also our staff. Helen, one of our trainers and beloved colleagues is a retired police officer who is just of recent, a single mom of two beautiful girls, and is struggling during this time. Our Trainer, Jorel, has chosen to stay home to support his single father along with the rest of their family after the loss of their mother to cancer. As for my husband and I, we have put our heart and soul and everything we have into this business, even foregoing homeownership and possibly starting a family.
Also, not visiting with my own family, due to my mother having lupus and is a cancer survivor. Grandparents who are elder and have compromised immune systems. My mother-in-law, who is working on the frontlines as a Grocery Manager for two very busy stores. We ask for help on behalf of our future, The Anytime Fitness Duarte Family, The Community of Duarte, and as people who really care about the Fitness Journey for all.
We understand these circumstances are something none of us could expect, but until the pandemic crisis is resolved, we are not able to survive without your help.
