Support Rick in his fight with cancer

Donation protected
As many of you may already know, our Father (brother, uncle, friend and colleague), Rick Quintana has been having a difficult end to an already tumultuous 2020. Dealing with severely debilitating neck and back pain for over the last 2 months, last week it finally became too much to bear. After an ambulance ride to Mills-Peninsula Hospital for all the tests you could possibly imagine, a few talks with some doctors, and a couple of days that felt like an eternity, he was given the bad news:

He’s been diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer.

Not the Christmas Eve news he was hoping for. Naturally, he was shocked. He was originally admitted due to shooting pain in his lower back, under the assumption that his problem was more of a muscular issue, and now he had to share the news with his family on a night usually saved for celebration. Given the circumstances, it’s been hard not to think about worse case scenarios. Thankfully, cooler heads have prevailed. Although the diagnosis has been scary for Rick (and the rest of us), his doctors have been nothing but confident in their treatment plan. They seem to have a good report with him, and he shares their optimism. Prostate Cancer is one of the more treatable types of cancer, even in a more advanced stage. We remain very optimistic that Rick is going to be OK.

Released late on Christmas Day, Rick was finally back in his home in time for dinner. Accompanied by a boatload of medication, he’s under the care of his most trusted nurse, his daughter. He’s going to be starting chemotherapy soon, as well as continuing with his other cancer treatments. The road to recovery will be a long one, but with our love and support, Rick will gradually make a full recovery. He, like many of us, has felt the sting of this year in more ways than one. And, like many of us, asking for help isn’t something he’s good at. So we’re doing it for him.

The sole purpose of this fund (created by us, his children) is to directly support the cost of Rick’s care & medication, and to help with his bills, as he’ll be unable to work while he undergoes his intense treatment. We still do not have a clear path towards him receiving disability payments, but we’re working to remedy that. We have no concrete timeline as to how long his battle will be, or for when things will return to normal, but any amount you can give is greatly appreciated. We feel weird asking for a set amount, but GoFundMe makes you, so we picked what amounts to about 6 months rent.

We understand that times are tough for absolutely everyone, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to anyone offering their support in non-monetary ways as well. We’ve already received many generous offers of people wanting to provide meals for Rick, but again, due to his treatments his diet is being closely regulated. Yes, it’s going to be a little while before Dad get’s a Mitchell’s Ice Cream cone or a T-bone steak, but we promise he’ll be well fed in the meantime.

Again, Rick is incredibly thankful for all of the well wishes, thoughts and prayers. He is, and has always been, our greatest supporter, so we intend to give that love back to him ten-fold. Those of you who have the pleasure of knowing Rick, are well aware of the love and compassion he has for all those he considers his friends and family. That’s a very large circle, and one that will be behind him 100%. We are firm believers that Rick WILL beat this disease, in time. On behalf of our family, we send you our deepest thanks.

Warmest regards,

Javier, Ricardo Ray & Lillian Quintana
