Support Recovery from a Vicious Dog Attack

Donation protected
Karam has always been the most gentle of giants in our community -- a proud man with an incredible work ethic, a deep-seated kindness, and more importantly, a real understanding of what it means to be a friend. As Concierge at our front desk, Karam greeted everyone in our building with a smile, always going above and beyond to offer his help and good humor to everyone he met. He is always happy to see you.

On a Saturday morning in March, the unthinkable happened. As he emerged from his home, he was brutally attacked by three large Akitas owned by his neighbor. The powerful dogs tore at his limbs and took bites out of him. He cried out for help and did what he could to fend them off, but they were relentless. When police arrived on the scene, the dogs had left him for dead, and gone on to attack others nearby. Upon finding Karam, and fearing for their lives and the lives of the emergency responders, the police had no choice but to shoot the dogs. It took 16 shots to bring two down. The third was captured.

Our loyal friend was rushed to the hospital where doctors operated on him for twelve hours in a desperate bid to save his life. That he survived is a miracle. He had lost five out of nine units of blood, and ended up spending over forty days in the ICU. Sadly, the attack has left him permanently disfigured. Since then, Karam has undergone seven more operations, and there are more to come.

Karam will need a number of skin grafts to repair the deep wounds left in both his legs and both his arms. Doctors are attempting to reconstruct what they can of his limbs by using muscle and tissue from other parts of his body. These are extremely painful, difficult procedures that leave him prone to complications from infections, delays, and heartbreak. Unable to work and too traumatized to return to his apartment it remains unclear how his medical bills will be paid, where he will live or how he will support himself in the future.

Karam emigrated from Egypt in 2002. He is without family in the U.S., and his road to recovery will be a long one. If Karam heard of someone suffering from such a brutal attack and the subsequent injuries, he would have been the first to donate what he could. While he is a very proud man, he is also a very generous, humble soul. He would never want to impose on anyone, or call attention to himself for anything. Indeed, he was very hesitant when we offered to launch this GoFundMe page for him. But even he realizes he’s in real trouble, and needs our help.

We are desperately hoping that with this GoFundMe campaign, we can raise enough to cover what we can of his medical bills, physical therapy, housing and food so that he can heal and re-establish himself. What that will entail exactly, no one knows yet. Please help us show our deep affection for this kind man, and provide any amount you can.

Thank you.
