On Sunday 17 September, 20 minutes into the first quarter of West Brunswick’s Reserves Grand Final, Club President and captain Ben Sexton was in his preferred spot on the ground… at the bottom of a pack. Unfortunately Ben’s right arm got caught in the scrum and he broke his arm in three places. Ben spent the next two days in hospital, where he received a plate and screw to repair his arm.
Since Ben broke his arm, a lot of people around the club have wondered what they can do to help out. The amount of love for the great man is extraordinary.
Ben is in for a tough recovery process and cannot bear weight on his arm for six weeks. Having just got married and moving into a new house, this has come at the worst possible time.
Of course, Ben would never want to make a big deal of it, because he loves the club, but he does not get paid for his efforts (25+ hours a week) as President. And as a self-employed artist and part-time picture framer, Beno's income will be severely affected while he is unable to work.
And of course, Ben would feel uncomfortable about the spotlight being on him, and would much prefer to be helping others. But that's the point... This gives us our chance, our outlet, to help out Beno during his time of need.
We are asking players and supporters to please contribute in any way, big or small, to this cause. All money will go to Ben and wife Sheena to assist with living expenses while he is unable to work. It may even allow them to have a honeymoon, rather than using his limited leave to recover from injury.
