Support Oliver’s Fight Against Liver Cancer

Hi, I’m Oliver Rosendal, and I’ve been living with a rare and complex heart condition, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) for my entire life. It’s a condition that affects the heart, but recently, I received devastating news about my liver. I’ve been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver due to Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD), as well as liver cancer. My doctors have advised that I need a liver transplant, but because of my heart condition, I can’t undergo a liver transplant alone. I need a combined heart and liver transplant, which would be the first of its kind in Finland.

The Challenge Ahead

The road ahead is incredibly difficult and uncertain. Finding both a viable heart and liver is going to take time, and in the meantime, my liver needs to be monitored closely. To receive the care I need, I travel a significant distance to the heart/liver clinic—about a 2-hour car ride followed by a 3.5-hour train journey one way. This travel is not only exhausting but very costly, and because of the long travel times, I usually have to stay overnight at a hotel or motel, further adding to the expenses.

The Cost of Recovery and Financial Strain

The transplant operation itself would be a major, life-changing procedure, and the recovery time is expected to take 6 to 12 months. During this period, I will not be able to work, leaving me without any source of income. On top of this, I was recently laid off from my job after I had to take time off for health reasons. When my employer discovered that my health issues were related to cancer, they decided to let me go, likely because it's cheaper for the company to fire me instead of paying for sick leave.

A Desperate Situation

We are in a very desperate situation right now. The symptoms of my condition make it difficult to work, and finding an employer who is willing to hire someone with a chronic illness like mine is almost impossible. The financial burden of travel, medical expenses, and living costs during my recovery is overwhelming.
