Officer Bre Prince (Brooks) began her career in law enforcement in 2008 and has
served her communities proudly and justly since 2010. She has
performed her sworn duties for four different agencies with her
current position being with Wake Technical Community College Police
Department.
While on duty in May 2020, she noticed chest pains accompanied by
shortness of breath and a feeling of heaviness which was caused by the
occurrence of a pneumothorax or partial collapse of her lung. During
this episode her body was able to heal itself without the need of
medical intervention. This feeling occurred again slightly less than a
month later while on duty in June 2020. This culminated in a trip to
the emergency room where it was discovered of another collapse. While
in hospital care at UNC, it was found that multiple blebs burst
causing a hole in her lung. This required emergency surgery to remove
a small section of the lung where this occurred, the insertion of a chest tube,
and stapling of the area to assist with the closure of the hole.
A pleurodesis to deter any future collapses was performed as well.
A collapse of the other lung occurred while recovering from the
emergency surgery which required the insertion of another chest tube to
alleviate this collapse. However, the pleurodesis portion of the
surgery was unsuccessful allowing for another collapse. This brought
about the need for a second procedure. This second procedure was
performed at Duke hospital where the surgery, multiple collapses and a
persistent air leak led to a month long stay. She was finally approved
for a much anticipated release at the beginning of September 2020.
However, she was readmitted into the hospital this month due to
another collapse of her left lung which led to the insertion of yet another chest tube.
Throughout this four month period she has experienced the insertion of
seven chest tubes, two major surgeries and the unfortunate diagnosis of
having a rare lung disease called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis which was
the underlying cause of this whole ordeal. Though the most recent
surgery has shown signs of success keeping her lung from
collapsing, she is experiencing nerve damage and its effects as a
result.
Officer Prince continues to remain optimistic through relentless prayer and a
commitment to the doctor's recommended orders. The healing process
varies per individual so there is no specific timetable as to when she
will be able to return to work. Any contributions assisting Officer
Prince until she is able to fully return to work will be vastly
appreciated.
