HISTORY

Nuri is a sweet and lovely 6-month-old puppy. She came from PA to Boston to be part of our little family that consists of me, my husband, and our cat Cosa. She loves to play soccer and tug-of-war with my husband, loves the back massages I give her, and snuggling with us is the favorite part of her day. Oh! She can’t wait for the moment that our cat finally agrees to play with her; we can tell by the way she moves her tail whenever she sees Cosa walking around her. 

Life has thrown us some curve balls, but she has shown us how strong she is. She is a FIGHTER!!  And as for us, we are doing our best to keep offering her the life she deserves, a happy and lovely life , as much as we can.


THE ACCIDENT

3 weeks ago Nuri was hit by a car. She suffered serious injuries like bruised lungs, her liver was in shock and her femur broke. Doctors said it would take a minimum of 48 hours to even consider her surgery.  They needed to see if her lungs were strong enough to support the anesthesia, and surely, quick enough, she recovered and went to surgery to fix her femur before the doctors even anticipated. On November 14, they fixed her leg with a plate and 6 screws. The doctors gave us a long waiting period time, but the day we took her in to remove the stitches, the doctors were amazed AGAIN at how well she was recovering from all of it.

THE ACUTE KIDNEY ISSUE

Everything was going so well and normal. Her leg was healing great and her mood was up in the sky, acting like a normal puppy, playful and full of life and love to every single human that came across her path during the wee walks. She surely gained the love of all the neighbors with her little “twerking dance” as we call it, wiggle tail and smile on her face. 


3 weeks after her surgery, we noticed a decrease in appetite. At this moment we thought she was being picky because she will refused some foods and selected to eat from a very few options. As the days passed we noticed her thirst abnormally increasing, and of course, lot of trips outside with it. Her mood drastically changed from one day to the next, from  playful to lethargic, which made us worried. That night, Monday, December 9th we rushed her to the ER and they did some blood work, where they found her blood levels were crazy high, she had a BUN of 65 and Creatinine 3.7 (normal should be between 0.6 to 1.2) . Immediately they hospitalized and put her on IV fluids, started a million blood tests to try figure out the cause.

After several blood test, they told us she has ACUTE KIDNEY DISEASE, which is treatable. An acute kidney disease happens when something external affects the function of it, either antibiotics, poison, bacteria, or infections. They are still waiting for the blood tests to come back with the results but they suspect some kind of Lyme Disease/Leptospirosis. It appears the results will take some more days and the waiting is killing us. 

THE REALITY

Since the moment we decided to bring Nuri to our family, we put all of our love and commitment towards her. We knew she was coming to be part of our family. and we believe in FAMILY, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.
 
Nuri definitely has had it hard with the accident and the sudden decrease of her health but she keeps showing her true soul as a fighter, she keeps getting brighter and brighter everyday. It’s no surprise for us that all the nurses are in love with her already. Whenever we go visit her we can hear all the doctors, technicians ,and nurses cheering up and having fun calling her name. She hasn’t lost her playful and bubbly personality and that let us know she keeps doing her best to recover and come back home. Doctors say it’s always good sign when patients are keeping good energy levels.

She is still very young and hopefully has a long life to live. She still has so many faces to brighten, experiences and adventures to live, play times with other furry friends and lots of snuggles with us. We know deep down in our heart this is not a lost cause. The doctors are very hopeful we can reverse the symptoms if we can lower and maintain her creatinine levels, and once that happens she hopefully come back to a normal life. 

The outlook for now seems stable. Her creatinine seems to be going down slowly but surely. The doctor told us we definitely need to be prepared with the costs for dialysis or any other treatment/hospitalization until we see her creatinine levels down back to normal and that can take days/weeks.

Since the accident and so far 4 days and 3 nights at hospital with IV fluids and antibiotics, we have spent over $10,000. With the amount of bills accumulating we are doing our best to keep her safe, alive and with us. It’s a lot of money but today we’ve put our pride in our pockets and asking for any help we can get, because we know there is a TREATMENT and there is a CURE. It will take time and patience but we are willing to do EVERYTHING it takes for us to offer her the resources, access to doctors, and necessary medication that will give her a long happy and quality life.
