Mike O'Connor & Family Fundraiser

Mike O’Connor is a rare bird. He is one of the kindest, most thoughtful and inspiring people you will ever meet. He never wavers in his priorities and is able to love fiercely and deeply. His devotion to his wife Nan, his children Michael and Emma, as well as extended family, friends, neighbors, students, and of course, his trusty sidekick, Zuzu, are unparalleled.  He has an easy laugh, loves to read, especially gripping historical accounts, and has never refused a good bike ride.  By the way he makes a mean banana bread. 

Mike doesn’t compromise on those things that matter most. He is eager to grow and learn about himself and others along the way and has spent the last 23 years as an elementary school educator, planting countless seeds and mentoring students and staff to be kind, open-minded and supportive of one another.  

Two years ago he took on a personal challenge and led a group of high school students on a trip to China.  With little experience in international travel, and knowing nothing of the language, Mike did as he always has always done, he taught his group of high school students by example, sharing his fears, struggles and triumphs and celebrating the act of discovery both of himself and the world.  

He is always there to lend a helping hand when the need arises and his positive nature and dedication to children have inspired thousands of students to make a positive impact on the world. However, it is Mike and his family that need our help now, and it is our turn to give back.

In November 2019, Mike suffered an unexpected health setback with what was thought to be a mild stroke. Incredibly, he was out of the hospital in less than a week demonstrating his incredible strength as he focused on his recovery. Unfortunately, in March of 2020, the true cause of what appeared to be a mild stroke was diagnosed; an aggressive form of brain cancer. Since this diagnosis, Mike has had three separate brain surgeries, without his family present (given COVID restrictions). Each time Mike walked out of the hospital in a matter of days. With each return home Mike is always quick to write a narrative on CaringBridge about how he has overcome the last obstacle and always includes an "Uplift" as he wants those who are supporting him to understand the gift he feels that life is.

Please consider donating to this important cause to help Mike and his family cover medical bills, other unanticipated expenses related to his diagnosis and to replace Nancy’s loss of income. She is a self-employed educator and reading tutor without access to benefits. Nancy is currently home caring for Mike and is unable to work.
