I am writing this gofundme page on behalf of my precious goddaughter and niece and to ultimately bring awareness to this rare and aggressive cancer known as retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is an eye cancer that develops in the immature cells of the retina. Though it is rare, with approximately 300 children diagnosed in the U.S. each year, it is the most common eye cancer in children. Retinoblastoma can occur in one or both eyes and is caused by genetic mutations in the nerve cells of the retina. The retina is comprised of nerve tissue and is the part of the eye that’s responsible for sensing light and signaling the brain through the optic nerve to interpret that light as images. Retinoblastoma is typically found in children under age 5, with the average age of diagnosis being 18 months old. Boys and girls are affected equally. Along with this unforgiving cancer, she received a diagnosis of rubeosis iridis. Rubeosis iridis, is defined as blood vessel proliferation along the surface of the iris. Left untreated, it can be vision threatening.
My precious and perfect goddaughter; to know her is to love her. Melania is full of love, life and laughter. She was a blessing brought into all of our lives. She is joyful, loving, polite and just the sweetest little girl! We ask for your donations to better support the financial burden that will be imposed on Melania's parents as they carry her through this unfathomable time. Please find it in your heart to contribute to her long and difficult recovery journey ahead. Although we know she is in the absolute best hands, we are also aware that it comes at a large cost. Find it in your heart to donate to a wonderful family. Please keep Melania Rose in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you,
Jenna Marie Sabatini aka Zia

A Parents Worst Nightmare
June 18, 2024- We took Melania to a pediatric optometrist for what we thought was a slight cross eye. An abnormal retina was found and my baby girl was referred to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. They feared we needed to rule out Retinoblastoma, a rare childhood eye cancer.
June 19, 2024- A second opinion. The doctor also saw an abnormal retina and tissue mass pressing against it. He too suggested we proceed with our visit to Memorial Sloan Kettering. Retinoblastoma was still the concern.
June 25, 2024- My baby’s initial exam scheduled at MSK. Melania will be put under anesthesia for several hours to do an MRI and thorough eye examination. I ask for all the prayers possible to protect my baby girl.
This is truly a parent’s worst nightmare.
