Support Liyang Network during Covid-19

Who are they ?
Liyang is a local to global advocacy network that amplifies the calls to action of Lumad (indigenous) communities in Mindanao, Philippines on the frontlines of environmental protection. THE LUMAD ARE THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES “Lumad” means “native of the land” in Cebuano. It is a collective identity term used to describe the 18 ethnolinguistic tribes of Mindanao, including the Ata, Bagobo/ Ubo, Banwaon, Blaan, Kalagan, Kaulo, Dibabawon, Gigagnon, Mamanwa, Mandaya, Mangguguwangan, Manobo, Mansaka, Matigsalog, Subanen, Talaandig, Tiboli and Tiruray.

What is their current situation during?
500+ Lumad people living in sanctuary at UCCP Haran evacuation center have not received any form of government aid since the COVID lockdown began on March 16. Mayor Sara Duterte publicly excluded them from any cash, food, or and basic necessities instead proposed that they  return to their province, their ancestral lands, where they have been forcibly evacuated due to militarization and landgrabbing. They have been given multiple death threats by paramilitaries, formed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines from Lumad communities themselves, if they were to return. Families of students who attend our Lumad schools have been denied government support even before COVID for "attending rebel schools" that teach basic literacy and numeracy and focus on sustainable agriculture, holistic community health/medicine, and culturally relevant academic curriculum. The Lumad are on the frontlines of environmental defense and are firm in their stand to protect their ancestral lands for the next generations, even while in evacuation.

How will the $5000 be used?
$400 will provide food and toiletries

$1000 will support (1) generator for the evacuation center or schools

$1600 will purchase a piso-wifi machine for indigenous students at a free boarding school for indigenous peoples (IP) from peasant backgrounds, CTCSM. The Dept of Ed is calling for classes to resume online on Aug 24 and many IPs are already at a disadvantage; not only with lack of access to wifi in the rural communities they come from, but not having access to wifi in their boarding school. State forces are trying to shut down the school's neighbors who provide piso-wifi as passive income to keep the school disconnected from the community, locally and internationally.

$2000 will buy garden tools, seeds, materials for the community of (540) in evacuation to support their sustainable agriculture rehabilitation efforts

Donate today and receive a raffle ticket for healing prizes for every $10 you donate! Special thanks to all of the organizations who have donated these amazing healing prizes!
