Hi! My name is Katelyn Liu, and I’m a Life Scout with Troop 55. For my Eagle Project, I’m partnering with the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden to educate on citizen science and native wildlife. I chose this project because I grew up exploring the Arboretum every week and participation in citizen science contributes to research that guides future conservation and stewardship efforts.
My Project takes place at Crescent Farm at the Arboretum, combining virtual learning and hands-on engagement:
- Created an iNaturalist project for the Arboretum, already with over 9,000 observations!
- Hosted a citizen science workshop teaching how to identify local species using iNaturalist.
- Designing and installing educational signage about native plants, their role in local ecosystems and how to engage with iNaturalist.
- Building an information box with laminated ID guides and citizen science resources.
- Developing an online hub with videos, activities, and iNaturalist links.
- Leading a community BioBlitz to introduce citizen science and wildlife observation through a fun, hands-on event. https://arboretum.org/events/crescent-farm-workshops-3/
I’m raising funds for:
- Weatherproof aluminum signage
- Redwood posts and hardware for installation
- Materials for the information box
- Tools, equipment, and volunteer supplies
Your support helps make this project possible and will inspire visitors to connect with nature, discover biodiversity, and engage in citizen science. Thank you to Roots & Shoots for a mini grant and to Home Depot Monrovia for partial material donations.
Thank you for supporting conservation education and helping bring my Eagle Project to life at the LA Arboretum!
