Hi there, for those of you who are new to Fourth Wall, I’m Sarah
I am an artist, researcher and designer with a specialism in public engagement and mental health. I am also the Director of Fourth Wall Folkestone CIC - an informal gallery, open studio and research space based in Folkestone.
In 2023, we managed to raise a whopping £2000 through this GoFundMe page which helped us move into a new bigger, more accessible and prominent space. Our latest event saw more than 1000 people come through the doors in a month proving the value of this very much needed move!
In 2024, we would really like to provide support and mentoring to an apprentice, investing in our community whilst expanding our team and offering even more opportunities, events, exhibitions and workshops. In order to make this happen, we need to raise an extra £3000 minimum, bringing our total target to £5000.
Fourth Wall Folkestone is a Community Interest Company and all profits generated are put back into the community. I’m proud to run the space on a ‘pay what you can / donations’ model and say that the space has run on trust that people will support each other. I hope to continue to prove that this model can work.
Our overall aims are to:
- Promote learning through making.
- Practice creative problem-solving.
- Use creative processes to open up dialogue.
- Create an informal safe space where we are all equal and can speak and be heard.
- Reduce stigma by welcoming and giving confidence to those who may not class themselves as “creative” or do not often engage in conversations about “mental health”.
- Share exciting work happening in mental health research with the wider community and inspire people to become more engaged in this.
- Be transparent about what it means to be an artist / an artist with mental illness.
- Explore alternative ways to make a living as an artist that offer work/life balance, and allow you to practice self-compassion and nurture mental wellbeing.
- Test new ways to make the art world more inclusive and accessible.
We cannot tell you how much we appreciate the backing the space has had so far, and we hope to see you in Fourth Wall Folkestone to access some of the creative activities and events soon.
