Support for the Greenfield Family & Breathe 4 ALS

Donation protected
Update: We are heartbroken to share that Jonathan passed away on June 13, 2021. This community continues to amaze us with love and support for the Greenfield family.

The family has been so lucky to have an amazing caregiver, Zenia, who has been incredible during this difficult time. For those who would like to continue to support the Greenfields, you can contribute to this gofundme. This will allow them to keep Zenia in their home to provide consistency and care for the children, and an extra set of hands for Iris, as well as help cover expenses as they navigate this unchartered territory without their husband/father.

Thank you so much to all of you who have so generously donated so far. It means the world to Iris and the many people that love the Greenfields!

Westporters Jonathan and Iris Greenfield live with their three children, Zach (12), Skye (10) and Josie (8). In December, 2018, fresh off competing in his third triathlon, Jonathan was diagnosed with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

When Iris, who has been healing people in the community as an acupuncturist for over 22 years, leaves work she comes home and continues to try to ease discomfort. She and Jonathan lock eyes, she zeros in on his gaze and she rattles off a litany of questions to figure out what he may need. He responds by widening his eyes, nodding, swaying, glancing, until he smiles and nods at her.  Once he is taken care of, she turns and begins to get his dinner together before she prepares something for the children. Between the kids' activities, school, work and caring for Jonathan it's a bustling house.

Thankfully, Iris has found some of the best caretakers to help with Jonathan, watching him like a hawk, treating him as if he's family. Unfortunately, most home care expenses are not covered by insurance. A few nights a week, Iris is able to have someone come for the night shift so she can try to get some sleep. Now, as Jonathan's care needs increase, friends and family are coming together to help raise money to cover the climbing costs.

Jonathan spent years as a documentary filmmaker, where he captured photos from his travels. We've compiled his most compelling photojournalistic pieces into a book. His style brings to life the juxtaposition of darkness and controversy flecked with humor and surprise. This fusion has always been the trademark of Jonathan's overall artistic approach; and ironically, a rightful comparison to his own life.

If you'd like to help, here are some options:

1) Donate to Breathe 4 ALS, at breathe4als.org or via Venmo @Breathe-ALS, to support Jonathan's home care and fund research and care for ALS patients

2) Pre-order Jonathan’s visually rich photography book at breathe4als.org/shop

3) Donate through this gofundme site to support the Greenfield Family, predominantly for the exorbitant cost of in-home care for Jonathan.

Thank you in advance for anything you can do to support this amazing family, and the Breathe 4 ALS organization!
