Support for Sicerie Brooks and Family

On December 11th, Sicerie Brooks was suddenly and unexpectedly caught in the line of fire. Thirty minutes after dropping her daughter off at Movies 14 in Mishawaka, while on duty driving for Lyft, a bullet traveled through the driver’s side of her car, through her thigh, and ended up lodged between her rectum and spine. Doctors say if the bullet had shattered, she would’ve been paralyzed.

Sicerie’s teenage daughter and friend came back to her car and jumped into paramedic mode until assistance came. They used blankets from the theater to apply pressure to Sicerie’s thigh.

After a night of scans and exams, Sicerie underwent surgery to remove the bullet and reroute her intestines. Her rectum was torn, requiring stitches and because of the way the bullet entered and lodged into her body, doctors had to disconnect her small intestine so that waste wouldn't continue to drain into her body. Sicerie now has a stoma, her small intestines route straight to the side of her belly and outside of her body. From there, she cleans up any and all waste coming out. She will be living this way for the next six months, while her body heals from the gunshot wound. If her body heals well, she’ll be able to have surgery done to reattach her small intestine to her large intestine.

Her life, and every facet of it, changed instantly. Despite everything, Sicerie feels overwhelmingly grateful to be alive and not paralyzed.

People around town know Sicerie by her title, Pico Queen. The mother-daughter team make and sell pico de gallo at the South Bend Farmers Market and Purple Porch Co-op through Sicerie’s start-up, Sielanah’s Savory Salsa . Between her pico passion and two other part-time jobs, the bills got paid. Unfortunately, none of these jobs offered healthcare and she will not be able to do any of them in her current condition. She rented her vehicle from Lyft and is now without transportation as well.

This all leaves Sicerie left with a hefty hospital bill and wondering how to make ends meet the next six months while she heals.

We’re hoping that by coming together to financially lift up Sicerie and her family, they won’t feel the weight of a heavy setback from this unexpected and traumatic incident. Any and all support is so appreciated. Thanks for stopping by. Please come back to get updated on Sicerie’s recovery and the impact of your generosity.
