Aisha is a first-generation, re-entry, low-income student who dropped out of high school at the age of 15 to help her mother support their family. By pure grit and dedication she passed the high school proficiency test at the age of 17, got a cosmetology license , supported herself and eventually enrolled at The Napa Valley College.

She applied for a scholarship from The Napa Valley College Foundation and ended up receiving funds multiple years in a row which supplemented her income and allowed her to stay committed to her education. Aisha earned an Associates in Natural Science and Mathematics, a Pre-Health degree, an Associates in Mathematics, and an Associates for Transfer in Physics all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. All of this hard work payed off and now Aisha is attending UC Davis.

 

"The transition from being a community college student to a university student was challenging. Especially when Napa Valley College was more than a school to me; It was my whole life. Not only did I attend full time, taking up to 17 units a semester, but I also worked on campus as a math tutor, and as an assignment grader. NVC was my main source of income, so once my time was done, I no longer had my jobs, or other forms of financial support... Yes, I am a first-generation, re-entry, low-income student, but I decided to become a Cosmetologist, an Artist, and up next: a Physicist. This change in academic trajectory is a direct result of having support from programs like the Napa Valley College Foundation. This impact empowers me to ditch those labels and find my own identity."
