Support Eddie Rey- Hit & Run Victim

Donation protected
As some of you have learned, Eddie Rey was the victim of a recent hit-and-run accident while crossing the street at an intersection two blocks from his home.  Unfortunately he was hit by an uninsured motorist that was driving an uninsured car that didn’t belong to the driver. The vehicle’s owner was eventually located and has identified the driver - but he has yet to be arrested or charged.

Eddie was admitted to the hospital after complaining of pain in his back and neck and a metallic taste in his mouth.  His head didn't hit the  ground and he didn’t suffer from any broken bones. But, he did suffer from blunt force trauma to his abdomen and pelvis, and suffered soft tissue damage and muscle sprains in his knee, neck, shoulders, back and jaw. Later on he learned that the metallic taste was a result of internal bruising/bleeding.

Eddie was examined, and treated at the hospital. After he was released he was told to follow up with his doctors office- but as is often the case, the initial adrenaline and shock can mask other symptoms.

Eddie has continued to complain that he has a lot of pain in his abdomen and lower back. After his initial visit to his doctors office, they closely monitored and followed up on Eddie and eventually told him to immediately return to the ER.

Further testing and MRI’s has found internal inflammation and infection in his digestive system.  This is a result of ballooning and thinning of his intestines. Eddie had previously reported nausea and what he thought looked like tiny brown rice in his vomit. Scar tissue shows it was a perforation that had resolved itself. Nurses later asked if the vomit looked like coffee grounds- and Eddie said yes. That was actually blood.

As a result of this accident Eddie has lost over 18 pounds and is restricted to a strict diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. He is also in physical therapy and has returned to work with restrictions.  He has a hard time sitting for more than a couple of hours, has a hard time walking long distances, and tires more easily.

He is being treated by his primary care doctor and is seeing a chiropractor and physical and movability therapist.

As friends of Eddie, we have decided to organize this fundraiser to help relieve some of the financial stress brought on by all of this.

Thankfully Eddie is insured, so much of his medical expenses will be covered. But he is still having to pay significant out of pocket expenses. Including transportation to and from his appointments.

After a lot of encouragement from on our end, and many other friends, Eddie has agreed to accept help through this GoFund Me.

All funds received will be used to alleviate the financial strain brought on by this crime, medication, deductibles, co-pays, transportation to and from his treatments, and also help cover part of his rent. Last week he had six appointments for his treatment- most of which were during his work hours so this means he is also missing  a lot of work.

There is a chance Eddie may have to go on temporary disability, which would increase his need. Depending on the outcome and treatment plan - Eddie will determine whether to continue treatments here in San Diego or sublease his apartment and temporarily return home to be closer to his family in Reno/Tahoe to save on rent expenses.

Everybody knows Eddie. He is a vibrant, free-spirited guy. He is deeply compassionate—his friends and family can speak volumes about his endless generosity and the light he exudes everywhere he goes. He is heavily involved in the community- always willing to help others.

Plainly put- Eddie does a lot for our community, and this fundraiser will help him stop worrying about the bills so he can focus on his recovery.

Any donation, big or small, is deeply and sincerely appreciated. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you send positive and healing energy his way and share the link to this cause. Eddie also has Cookie by his side- an he is always happy to have help giving her the playtime she needs and deserves.

Thank you,

Debbie Daniels

PS- Any funds that are donated and later reimbursed will be donated to other emergency cash assistance programs here in San Diego.
