Support During Charlotte's Surgery

Donation protected
UPDATE 2 MAY::

We confirmed the MYCN and Charlotte is now officially high risk. She will undergo some fairly brutal treatment, and I've again upped the goal as I try to keep a cushion for needs over the coming months.

Funds raised will go to medicines not covered by insurance (including the stuff that protects her internal organs from the MIBG scans), defraying bills while I'm unable to work, buying household necessities (gas, food, sanitizing materials), and buying general distractions or equipment to keep Charlotte happy and comfortable/to make life easier on mom in this isolated time (special cushioned car seat, bike trailer, coloring books, etc.). Please also follow the Facebook page for further updates! And thank you for thinking of us. This ride would have been insurmountable thus far without financial support.

UPDATE 15 APRIL::

Humbled at how fast we met the first goal! I've updated the fundraiser to reflect the raised cost of the car repairs, as well as the fact that the surgical recovery will take longer than expected. Any additional funds past that goal will be used to make up lost wages during time taken off to care for C, as well as household essentials (sanitizers, medicines for C, etc.).

Calling all Knights of Princess Charlotte!

Just after the snowstorm in March, we found ourselves rushing our 4 year-old daughter Charlotte to the ER. She had swallowed a dime and we suspected it was lodged in her chest. Since then, we’ve thanked God a million times for that stupid coin, because when she had an x-ray to find it, doctors discovered a tumor the size of a tangerine in her chest. It was like an earthquake in terms of destruction to life as we knew it.

Life since then has been an aftershock buffet of biopsies, scans, and hours spent in the hospital running lab after lab. We now know that Princess C has a kind of cancer called neuroblastoma (with some ganglioneuroblastoma tissue as well). We seem to have caught it miraculously (on accident!) before it had a chance to metastasize. But that wasn’t the end of the shockwaves.

While she was previously thought to be intermediate risk, two recent biopsies have come back positive for MYCN gene amplification. This nasty little genetic quirk rocketed her to extreme high risk. She will undergo an emergency surgery on the 20th of April to remove as much of the tumor as possible and to run final MYCN tests to make certain the last ones weren’t an error. The surgery itself is risky and difficult, and we had desperately hoped she didn’t need it.

When it rains, it pours, and the cherry on this rotten sundae was finding out that the steps we took to have our car’s A/C fixed last year have failed again, and repairs will cost around $1200. The car also needs new tires, as we’ve been stuck driving the awful construction around the Dallas Children’s complex multiple times a week and they were worn before then. Making sure we can safely and comfortably get the princess to and from doctor’s appointments and any ensuing ER or treatment visits is critical.

The funds raised from this GoFundMe will go towards car repairs, household bills for the month of April, and will allow Charlotte’s dad to take the week off work following her surgery. That way, as she’s in recovery and as we get the MYCN results back, we have a chance to reel as a family before charging ahead with what seems like some very grim treatment.

If you'd prefer to contribute by Venmo, I have that info below. If you’re moved by the story, but unable to donate, don’t worry! You can help by sharing this GoFundMe and by following her journey on the Facebook page. I post updates, make prayer requests, and share her lively spirit and antics there.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. It’s a fearsome road, but not one we walk alone. As always, onward.
