Help Darcia Graduate From College!

Meet Darcia, born and raised in Wyoming, specifically the Wind River Reservation as a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe. Her Indian name is Wyapah Doya Nukeed, meaning Woman Who Runs the Mountains. Until now she has funded her undergraduate education in full through merit-based scholarships and grants, like the Cheryl Saban Self-Worth Foundation for Women & Girls Tribal Scholars. As her senior academic year at Carroll College approached, she found out that part of her financial support fell through due to a clerical error on behalf of the awarding institution.

Darcia is enrolled in a premedical program at school, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She envisions herself as a primary care physician, giving back to the Native American communities by providing care and mentorship to her people. I am confident that Darcia will be a dedicated and compassionate physician. She is a persistent community wellness advocate by working with the local YMCA and volunteering at the Helena Food Share.

I met Darcia this summer during her internship at the National Institutes of Health. She was a member of the Diversity Summer Research Training Program, an extremely competitive and selective internship. While working with her, she shared that growing up on a reservation provides limited academic support. She was among the 20% of her class to graduate high school. Despite the advice from her high school guidance counselor to pursue a trade school or associates degree, Darcia is one of two students to attend a four-year university. Even with these additional educational and financial hurdles, Darcia has persisted in her academic excellence.

Darcia has worked hard to finance her education and set up a successful future for herself. Due to a misfortunate oversight by a financial backer, her education is now in jeopardy. We are asking for financial support to supplement the assistance she was counting on to finish her undergraduate degree. Our target is to raise $6,000. All proceeds will go towards paying educational costs for Darcia Rae Pingree, Woman Who Runs the Mountains.
