Remembering & Celebrating Corey

Donation protected
Dear Friends of Corey and China,

Please know that on December 3rd, Corey Fischer had an incapacitating event as a result of a serious brain bleed.  We will be using CaringBridge and GoFundMe to share news about Corey’s condition, and also to alert you to ways that you might help, should you be so moved.  Please feel free to share this news with friends who are close to Corey and China, so that they too can have access to updates and participate in his healing.

On Tuesday, December 3rd, Corey was taken taken to the local ER with what was diagnosed as bleeding in his brain stem, the area of the brain responsible for critical involuntary processes such as heartbeat and breathing. He was immediately transferred to the UCSF Neurological Intensive Care Unit.  Surgery was on Friday, 12/6, for surgical removal of the source of the bleeding, a long-standing vascular malformation. The surgery was long, and judged to be very successful.  UCSF's neurosurgery department is the best in the world and we’re grateful that Corey is in such excellent hands!

As of Monday, Dec 16th, he was in the UCSF neuro ICU and the prognosis is good.  He received a temporary tracheotomy a few days ago to help him in re-establishing his swallowing reflexes in order to be able to be relieved of intubation and dependence on the respirator for breathing.  That enabled him to get off the respirator and resume breathing on his own. There is still swelling in his brain stem and he will remain in the ICU until he is further stabilized and then be transferred first to another floor and then to a skilled nursing facility for more rehab.

We are trying to limit the number of calls and emails China is receiving (she is shuttling between Kentfield and a friend's place in SF)- thus these sites, so you can find out the current information on Corey whenever it’s convenient for you and share your well-wishing.  Cards can be sent, if you wished, to 907 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Kentfield, CA 94904.

Prayers/thoughts of love/holding in the light/etc. are all much appreciated!   Donations will be gratefully received a Corey & China through this catastrophic and unexpected event.  We estimate that once he is through months of rehab, the cost of his care will be astromical and as yet we don’t know how much China and Corey will be responsible for (after their two different health insurers).  All of their paid work and other projects are on hold, as China is daily by Corey’s bedside, often with sons and grandsons and some essential help from members of the Everyday Zen community. We’ll let you know when he’s in a place such that you could visit.

China and friends will be posting updates here and also sometimes on a CaringBridge site

Thanks to you all,
