Polymnia Considers Matthew Shepard

The Polymnia Choral Society, a nonprofit organization, is composed of people who love to sing and to share their music with others. Founded in Wakefield, MA in 1953 and based in Melrose, MA since 1956, the group serves the cultural and educational interests of a number of communities north of Boston by presenting concerts ranging from sacred hymns and classical music to popular show tunes and other popular genres

The chorus includes more than 60 voices, with most of the singers coming from Melrose, Wakefield, Malden, Stoneham and Saugus; some members come from as far away as Concord, Westborough, Marbleheadand Topsfield.

On March 28,  2020, Polymnia Choral Society will be performing the oratorio, "Considering Matthew Shepard".  This oratorio came out of the tragic death of Matthew Shepard who was beaten and murdered in 1998 for being gay. This choral piece looks at the darkness of Shepard's death and the thoughts and feelings that came from people who rejected his humanity as well as looking towards hope and the possibility of transformation to something more loving and uplifting.

This performance of "Considering Matthew Shepard" will be held in the Performing Arts Center in Melrose, MA.  Engaging with people beyond music is an aspiration of Polymnia Choral Society and performing "Considering Matthew Shepard" is our first step. We are aiming to raise money not only to fund the concert but also to offer a percentage of our profits to support the work of organizations serving  the  LGBTQIA+ community, specifically those that partner with us for this event.
