WI/MN Teacher Needs Harvey Support

Donation protected
As many of you know, Hurricane Harvey caused historic and deadly flooding in the Houston area. Many famiIies lost everything and as a community we are in great need of many donations. This past May I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and joined the Houston community through Teach for America. I am beginning my first year as a 4th grade Math and Science Teacher at Judson W. Robinson Jr. Elementary.

The demographic of my school is 75% LatinX, 24% African American and 1% White. The majority of students are English Language Learners and almost 90% receive free and reduced priced lunch. In the last two consecutive years, our students have met both the Reading and Math standards on the STAAR test (the standardized state test), and they are extremely bright kiddos!

As of now, the impact from Hurricane Harvey is that my school was almost completely under water and is not safe to enter. To begin the school year, my students and I will be meeting in an alternative location. I am asking for support for my classroom, the elementary school I work at, and also for the families that have experienced devastation in our neighborhood. My classroom has lost everything: student and teacher desks, basic classroom supplies, SMART board, iPads, some of my personal belongings, and student donated supplies. To begin school, students will need a safe place to sleep, hygiene products, food and clean water, clothing, and school supplies. In my classroom, we are in need of EVERYTHING from desks to white boards to pencils. Anything and everything helps, and all donations will be allocated appropriately based on the urgent need of the school and students.

To gain a better understanding of the flooding and damage that took place around our school, check this video out: http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Houston-Police-Dive-Team-Rescues-Dozens-at-Apartment-Complex-442070543.html
The apartments shown are where many of our students live, and had to be evacuated out of and taken to various shelters around the city of Houston.
