Support Barrie’s fight against Cancer

Barrie’s close friends and family have set up this GoFundMe page on his behalf.

In November 2020, Barrie started suffering from severe abdominal pains and was admitted to A&E. After multiple hospital visits, in-patient stays, and exploratory procedures, Barrie was diagnosed with Appendiceal Cancer in April 2021 Appendiceal Cancer is an extremely rare form of cancer. (It is estimated that fewer than 1,500 people in the United States are affected by appendix cancer each year.)

This diagnosis came after a 5 Month battle to prove what Barrie already knew to be true, something was very wrong!

There was hope that Barrie’s cancer could be managed and treated successfully, however in May 2021, following a specialist appointment and a further hospital stay in Dublin, Barrie was informed that the tumour attached to his appendix had ruptured, and unfortunately the heart-breaking news that Barrie was now dealing with Terminal Cancer, with secondary metastasised tissue on the peritoneum and on the outside of the gastrointestinal organs.

Barrie’s family and friends are heartbroken with this news; however Barrie’s strength, spirit and positive outlook has filled everyone with  hope and inner strength. Barrie will fight this fight with every being in his body, and he is surrounded with the support of his family and friends. He is our light, and he fills us with hope each day.

Unfortunately, due to the nature and stage of this cancer, medical treatment options are very limited for Barrie. In June 2021, Barrie started Chemotherapy. Along with Chemotherapy, Barrie has researched and met with nutritionists and Ireland's top specialists in non-traditional therapies. These therapies along with Chemo can be life saving for Barrie. These with various alternative options / treatment that can happen in conjunction with his Chemo. This is going to be a long and costly journey to treat the cancer.

We appreciate this is a very tough time right now with Covid-19 and everyone is struggling in their own way, but we would be truly grateful if you could spare any donation that is affordable to you.

No one can put a price on this young man’s health and life, and this is why this GoFundMe page is being set up, to financially support Barrie to undergo these treatments, to keep his spirits and possibilities alive, and to give our friend and loved one the best opportunity to survive this illness.

Brief synopsis of non-traditional therapies and Complimentary therapies:

As directed by his nutritionist, Barrie will be taking Natural food therapies including: Supplements, Digestive Enzymes, Organic foods proven to aid in the treatment of cancer, and topical balms. Barrie engaging in this strict diet and supplement intake will help fight the illness from the inside out and is key to him winning this battle. Without these supplements and food therapies, the capacity for Barrie’s body to intake and digest food would be extremely limited.

These are just a few of the non-medical treatment options that Barrie is currently undergoing.

Barrie has selflessly devoted his life to working with the most vulnerable in society within the youth and community sector but right now he is the one in need of support.

Pamela Massey, Jennifer Mulcahy and Grainne ODonoghue have organised this fundraiser, to support Barrie and this family therefore You're generosity will go directly towards helping Barrie deal with the financial repercussions of his current condition and treatments, so that he can focus on healing. Any excess funds received that are not used in Barrie’s treatment will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society & Marie Keating Foundation.
