Jade is a curious 4-year-old with an unmistakable energy, contagious laugh, and bright eyes undimmed by leukemia. On January 13th, 2012, at 21-months-old, Jade was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow – the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. Eight months and five rounds of chemotherapy succeeded in putting her leukemia into remission, allowing her to come home and be...all that she was intended to be. Sadly, the family’s life was shattered for a second time on March 19, 2014 when sweet Jade relapsed with leukemia just a few weeks shy of celebrating her fourth birthday. Once again, the family faced an unimaginable battle with childhood cancer.
On July 3, 2014, Wonder Jade (as she has been affectionately nicknamed due to her strength, bravery, courage, and love for Wonder Woman) received a cord blood transplant. We hope and pray that the cord blood is her cure since no adult bone marrow matches were found. She has faced many bumps during her recovery, yet has smiled her way through a battle no child should
ever have to face. But as Jade will tell you, “I’m brave…I’m strong…I’m ready for whatever comes along!”
Simply put: Wonder Jade is nothing short of amazing.
This kind and loving family has experienced many challenges over the past two years, doing everything possible to save and celebrate Jade’s life. However, medical bills and expenses from two cancer diagnoses have left an indelible mark on their lives and making ends meet alone has become an extraordinary hardship for them. With Jade’s impending discharge from Children’s National Medical Center and an extensive post-transplant treatment plan (hospital appointments and testing every other day, an extremely expensive and necessary medication regimen, as well as being prepared for any emergencies or setbacks), Jade, her ten-year-old big brother, and parents need a helping hand. Now should be the time for needed healing, both physically and emotionally. No family on this journey, including Jade’s, should have to bear the weight of such worries.
