Healthcare services for those sleeping rough

Help Sunny Street continue to provide healthcare services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and vulnerability

Sunny Street is a mobile outreach unit with Doctors and Nurses providing healthcare services for homeless and vulnerable individuals and families.

We make it easier for people to access healthcare services and give our patients the opportunity to sit and have a genuine conversation with a Doctor and Nurse. Our team takes the time to get to know their patients and develop an understanding of their (often complex) health concerns. Our approach allows us to take real action and positively impact the health and lives of our patients.

We need your help

Our clinics are getting busier and we are getting overwhelming feedback from the community to expand, but we need your help.

Sunny Street relies on the support from our amazing volunteers but there is also a financial cost to delivering this service, such as laptops, wound care products, clinical equipment, vehicles, fuel, insurances etc.

We need to raise $80,000 to help us deliver on what our community has asked for - expand our service to more locations.

We are actively ensuring Sunny Street’s financial sustainability through partnerships, grants and corporate sponsorship's, but until then, we need your help to continue our work.

The impact we are making

Over the past 9 months, our volunteers have had over 6,000 consultations and conversations and with your support we can care for even more of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

We’ve conducted this work out of closets, mobile medical trucks, on patios - wherever we can go to create healthcare access for vulnerable Australians, we go! There has not been one clinic that we have walked away from and not made a positive impact on someone’s life.

In a recent survey of our patients, 92% of respondents said that they avoided having to go to hospital because of a Sunny Street clinic. 100% of respondents also said they feel like the Sunny Street team listened to them and they were treated with respect.

The best way to explain the impact that we have is to hear directly from our patients:

“The services you provide are amazing, approachable, helpful, efficient and I felt comfortable and relaxed... What you already provide is not to be faulted, and I feel and will it flourish even more with extra volunteers... With more funding, this service will help more people than you can ever understand unless you've lived on the streets... It’s a daily struggle with general health, mental health, emotional health, addictions, and relationships within the homeless community who are all suffering financially and socially. Your service makes being homeless more supportive and makes homelessness journeys more normalised, validated, and listened to. Thank You.”

“Great team. Always caring. So appreciated.”

“I think that you guys are AWESOME”

“[Sunny Street are] friendly, they listen and care”

“They are there when I need it without any question. The follow up is all ways there and even to this day it is still there.”

“The nurses are always courteous and happy too see you and have a chat”

Our journey

Sunny Street is a privately-owned social enterprise, founded by Dr Nova Evans and Nurse Sonia Goodwin. The two met while working in the Public Health System. They questioned whether they were truly reaching those within the local community who were vulnerable and were unable to access mainstream healthcare.

As skilled leaders, managers and clinicians, they decided to search for a way to positively impact their local community’s healthcare at an individual, family and regional level, and take action. In March 2018, Dr Evans & Sonia Goodwin resigned on the same day from their public sector managerial roles. They decided they had 20 years of their professional years left to make a difference as a Doctor and a Nurse and felt that they would be able to influence the healthcare system by creating a new model of care and working outside the system - and so Sunny Street was born.
