Suman's Scholarship for Research at VCU, Richmond,

Tax deductible
I am Bonnie Thurber, CEO of Educational Continuum Organization (ECO), NFP. ECO is a charitable organization that provides educational workshops and scholarships for those in need. The purpose of this GO FUND ME is to raise money for the support of the advanced education for an extraordinary Nepali graduate student, Suman Gautam.

In Spring, 2021, Suman Gautam was awarded a Physicists PhD Scholarship at Virginia Commonwealth University http://bulletin.vcu.edu/graduate/school-medicine/medical-physics-phd/ where he will study Brachytherapy*, a form of radiotherapy.

For the ten years that I have known Suman Gautam, he has always been interested in getting a PhD in physics in the USA so he could help the people in Nepal. As a student at Prithvi Narayan campus, Pokhara, Nepal, he excelled and received an MS degree in Astrophysics.

Three years ago, he became interested in medical physics and received Scholarship at Western Illinois University (WIU). He graduated first in his class with an MS degree in Condensed Matter Physics at WIU, May 2021, with his second MSc degree in Solid Physics.

While at WIU, Suman published: “Study of Fluorescence Properties of Praseodymium (Pr3+) ions Doped Lead Boro-Germanate Glasses,”

In his VCU research study, his prime investigation is the feasibility of the interaction of radiation with matter for the treatment of cancer cells using brachytherapy* techniques, the most leading technique in the treatment of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and uterus cancer.

“Physics was my favorite subject in secondary school. Medical physics uses physics principles, methods and techniques from the diagnosis to the treatment of patients. I feel honored to receive the 2021 VCU Physicists PhD Scholarship award,” he said.

He hopes more people will realize the importance of establishing medical physics its applications in Nepali research and clinical settings.

To make his five years of study a success at VCU, he needs his family including his wife Nisha Poudel, eight year old daughter and two year old son to join him.The money raised through Go Fund Me will allow Suman’s family to relocate from Kathmandu and arrange housing in Richmond, Virginia.

Money to pay the first month, last month and deposit for their apartment as well as their trip from Katmandu, Nepal to Richmond, Virginia.

*In brachytherapy the radioactive source is either placed very close to the tumor or directly into the tumor. In this approach the rays only have a short distance to travel in the body. The Greek word for “short” is brachys, and this is where the word “brachytherapy” comes from. Radioactive substances are used as the source of radiation for internal radiotherapy.

One of the main goals of brachytherapy is that radioactive materials are implanted directly into or near the tumor during a small operation. Unlike external radiotherapy, radiation can reach the tumor directly, thereby minimizing the damage done to healthy tissue. Doctors are still trying out different types of radiotherapy in order to find out which approach is suitable for different people and situations.
