Suki The Cat And Her Disappearing Act

Good News!  As of yesterday, Suki has been adopted! Next week, she’ll be on her way to her forever home in Cary, NC — the best disappearing act of all.

But you can still enjoy her image for $100 and help out the Independent Animal Rescue during this tough time. . . .

As a wee kitten Suki had been found at a busy intersection by a young woman with her two children. The mother phoned Independent Animal Rescue to volunteer to be a foster, took the training and then started with her new foundling. Suki was introduced into a household of eight full-grown cats, a couple of dogs, minus a father/husband that had just left the family. In this chaotic household Suki grew up. The mother took great pride in feeding everyone well. Suki grew into a lanky glossy-coated black Siamese, exclusively indoors.

An adoption application for Suki was submitted. Suki’s foster mother never responded. Meanwhile, Suki remained at-large, getting well fed; receiving attention sporadically. Mostly the cat slipped under everyone’s radar, that is, until a volunteer at IAR’s office asked why had an application for Suki been ignored? By this time the black cat’s bio was at the bottom of the Cat Page. She was just under 2 years old. Suki’s foster mom was phoned and discovered to be overwhelmed. At this point Mary Dow called me, asking if the studio was currently available? Yes it was - a couple days later, Mary delivered a freshly spayed two-year-old Suki. When she was first rescued she had gotten shots and then disappeared, till now.

At my studio, and out of her crate, she hid for two months. I knew she was there. Food was devoured, water drunk and litter box used daily. For two months I took care of an invisible cat. I borrowed an IAR live trap and baited it with food– Suki avoided it. I caught glimpses of her and it was clear she wasn’t loosing weight. Eventually I baited the trap with top grade raw hamburger meat. Once trapped, she was installed in a three-tier cage. In the small space I discovered an affectionate, loud purring, talkative cat.

While in the enclosure others met her and found her tentative, but friendly. She seemed comfortable in the cage, but the one time I forgot to lock it, she escaped. When I realized she was out my heart sunk. Will this cat ever be placed or even be seen again? My fears subsided when Suki jumped onto my lap. She loves attention, but still takes her time trusting new people. We are seeking a kind, experienced, up-to-the-challenge cat person for this very personable and independent beauty. NEW ADOPTER MEETS ALL REQUIREMENTS!

Having a studio cat, for almost a year, naturally, a portrait would have to be done. IAR’s normal fund raising events have been canceled. To help, I’ve completed a run of 25 hand-pulled linoleum prints of the striking Suki. They are $100 or more each and 100% goes to IAR. Whoever adopts Suki gets pick of the prints and the cost of the print will be refunded once she is securely in her home. At this point, it is not hard to imagine that Suki will successfully develop into a remarkable companion. What would you enjoy most about having a pet like Suki?
