Su'juk Support Fund

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

On March 16th Su’juk closed it's doors and were forced to let go of staff with no reopening date in sight. This has been devastating for myself and our team. I am asking for your help. My name is Su Beyazit and I'm the founder of Su'juk, a vintage store-meets hair salon located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NY.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Su’juk is wholeheartedly run by an inspiring group of women who choose to do things boldly, creatively, and always with love. It is key to the undoubtedly unique fabric of Clinton Hill. Today, we are in fear of losing our home due to Covid-19.

Strength and resilience runs in my family. My mother moved my sister and I from Adana, Turkey when I was five years old. She came to the United States to give us better opportunities and education. However, growing up with Turkish Muslim roots in North Carolina had many challenges. We were not always accepted; my mom spoke broken English and cleaned houses. My mom taught me to ignore what people said and told me I can accomplish anything I put my mind too. I have always carried those beliefs with me.

In 2006 I moved to New York City to pursue a creative career and attend Parsons The New School For Design. I opened my first business, Su’juk in 2012. I was 25 with no credit and very little capital, but with a big dream. I gave my prospective landlord a cover letter explaining why he should entrust me with his space and outlining a three-year business plan. He took a chance on me and gave me a one-year lease. Seven years later, I'm proud to say that I have turned that small, 300-square-foot space into a beaming light within the Clinton Hill community.

At Su’juk, we employ nine women who come from diverse backgrounds, including women of Philippino, African American, Caribbean, Italian, and Latino descent. Su’juk has housed incredible talent from the community over the years—hair stylists, vintage buyers, tarot readers, nail artists, mothers, chefs and yogis. Su’juk also curates multiple collaborative events like block-wide parties, offering music, henna and tarot, as an intrinsic thread that continues to connect people. We offer a home for so many women who seek a place where they will not be judged and can share their stories and originality. Customers visit the shop from near and far and always tell us how much they appreciate its rawness and authenticity. It truly demonstrates an example of how all women should treat and hold a place for one another. Su’juk is my first child.

All of Su’juk’s workers are self-employed and rely on clients and appointments to make each paycheck. Over the past few weeks we’ve had to fully cope with the reality that is upon us. We have been forced to shut the business down for the safety of the community and our employees I'm writing to you in hopes that you will hear our story and help us—even if it's just a little bit. Any money you can provide would be used to offer some financial relief for my staff, pay rent, cover insurance and pay for utilities so Su’juk can re-open with a sense of hope and strength.
