My brother, John Embry, owner of Sugarfoot and Peaches BBQ in Ft. Scott, Kansas lost his business on Friday, November 10, 2017 due to an unpreventable electrical fire that started in the rear of the building per the State Fire Marshall. Sad to say without giving full details, his insurance had lapsed and he had no insurance coverage at the time of the fire.
John has devoted 11 years of his life including 15 to 20 hours a day working in the restaurant and all of his money to keep keep his customers happy and the business going. In the last six months, it has just been one expense after the other with equipment failures, i.e. cooler going out, ice machine failure, microwave going out, cookstove quit working, etc. In fact, not more than 20 minutes before the fire broke out, and new $800.00 cookstove had been delivered and was still sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor uninstalled. The other repairs have cost several thousand.
I joined his staff at the beginning of the year to help relieve some of his hours and expenses, working 10 + hours a day and driving 100 miles round trip per day, most of the time, six days per week until my health recently prevented that many days.
I humbly ask for your help to cover the expenses of clean-up and the attempt to salvage any supplies but it does not look like there will be much to salvage. He had just had a delivery of foods and supplies that morning which he will have to pay for even though all was destroyed fire. There are still the monthly bills and salaries to be covered. Not only did he lose his income, four waitresses and a clean-up/cook assistant are out of jobs.
Also in the building was John's collection of music equipment which consisted of electric guitars, an acoustic guitar, bass guitar, all with cases, an electronic piano, a very expensive pa system and amplifiers. John loved his music and entertaining his customers when possible. It was his only relief of stress....when he could play and sing. He also lost his golf clubs and repair supplies which he did as a side line when business was slower in the afternoons. He lost thousands of dollars in decor which constisted of autographed photos from celebrities, golf ball collections, family heirlooms and photos just to name a few. And all most all of the restaurant equipment is a loss.....his computers, cash register...anything associated with running his business.
John has lived in the Ft Scott and Pittsburg area for many years and knows so many people. He made a habit when possible, to go out and visit with his customers which many were repeat customers. Some were locals, some truck drivers that always stopped when they could and became family, some travelers and some from cities several hundred miles away that came just for the food and to see everyone that worked there.
Not only is he in need of expense cash, there is a need for help in the clean-up. We need rags, insulated containers of hot water, Dawn dish soap and vinegar, shovels, garbage bags, dumpster, bottled drinking water, vinyl gloves for washing things and work gloves for helpers in all sizes.
The out-pouring of compassion in words has been so welcome and appreciated by hundreds but at this point cash assistance is needed asap for the clean-up, due bills and any possible hope of re-opening in the future.
