Study Abroad Opportunity

Donation protected
My name is Mariah Bartlett and I am a senior at the University of Washington in Seattle, majoring in Sociology with a double minor in Diversity and Disability Studies. I also have plans to go to Graduate School for Occupational Therapy where I can pursue my dream of helping people in need, especially within the disabled community .

I have recently been accepted into a study abroad program through UW's Rehabilitation Services department that is offering a course on Disability in Limited Resource Settings. This will be a 28 day course located in South Africa, where we will be taking classes at Stellenbosch University, visiting rural clinics, and helping take surveys of disabled children in nearby villages. This course will provide an amazing opportunity for me to learn more about disability, resources, and rehabilitation services that I can largely apply to my future career.

Program Description:
Using South Africa as a cultural, political and socioeconomic context, students will explore a wide range of issues related to disability. Specifically, students will explore the intersections of disability, gender, race and economic status through a lens of international human rights. Students will examine issues central to health care and rehabilitative services, accessibility of built environments and information technologies, and access and barriers to education and employment. We will address these diverse issues using the twin themes of international human rights, specifically the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and international development.

With that being said, I am available for services up until the time I leave at the end of August, including babysitting, dog sitting, and house sitting which would largely help my funding efforts. In addition to any services, my family Etsy (BartlettTreasures), where we make a ton of wood crafts, would also greatly support my funding with any purchases you make. If you are able to donate, whether big or small, I am sincerely grateful for your generosity and appreciate all your help.

Thank you for your time in reading about me and my future academic endeavors and please share if you would like.
