I used to hate Spanish class when I was little, and I never understood why it would be the highest grade out of all the elementary school electives I had to take. In middle school, I decided to get my first credit of Spanish out of the way so I would only have to take one more credit in high school and fulfill the language requirements needed to graduate. While in middle school, I realized that learning Spanish came to me easily and I found that I really enjoyed the class. My Columbian teacher would be one of the first to support me and encourage my studies in Spanish.
Having been VERY fortunate to travel around the world from a young age, during the two years of taking Spanish in middle school my family traveled to Roatán, Honduras and Cozumel, Mexico where I was able to practice what little Spanish I knew, learn new vocabulary, and learn more about the culture and traditions of the islands. These experiences only increased my interest in learning Spanish.
In high school, I earned the required language credits to graduate and even enrolled in advanced Spanish courses at the college level at UNC-Greensboro. My family also took more trips, and one location has stayed with me: Spain. I absolutely love the history, culture, food, and music (it is how I have gotten into playing flamenco guitar), and would love to further immerse myself in everything it has to offer by studying abroad in Valencia. I also plan to utilize Spanish in my career while working as a medical professional to better serve those who live with a language barrier and to eliminate the need for additional resources during their medical treatment such as a medical translator.
It has been a long-time goal of mine to study abroad in college and I don't have many opportunities to do so due to the major I am pursuing. I will be set to start my summer education abroad at the beginning of May, and I would greatly appreciate any donation amount. This summer experience (one of the shortest amounts of time to be abroad for) will cost $14,000 and still doesn't include air fare, food, basic necessities, etc. I will need all of the help I can receive, and I thank you so very much!
