Students in the Dominican Need Our Help

As many of you know, the Dominican Republic holds a special place in my heart, as does educating students.

I have learned of a school on the North Coast of the country, called Greenwood Holistic Learning Centre, that works with all students including those with differing needs (Autism, Processing delays, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Speech and Language delays, Asperger's Syndrome to name a few). Some of the children cannot get their learning needs met in the public or private school systems and have few options for learning. The school provides an individualised education and extra support for those who need it. It currently has students from many countries including Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Europe, and North America. Currently, the school is in the process of becoming a non profit foundation, but needs some help with 2 initiatives.

Firstly, the school has rescued 4 horses and is in the process of preparing them to be therapy horses for the students. There is a field at the side of the school where the horses are kept. The school is trying to divide the field so the horses have half the field and the other half can be utilized for the kids to have more space to play. At the moment, the wall is made from old tires, but the hope is to replace the tires with a more suitable fence. Unfortunately, the school does not have the resources to complete this project.

The second initiative is to purchase specialized educational assistive technologies necessary for the students with additional needs. Laptops/Ipads with text to speech software (helping with blindness, dyslexia, visual impairments, or learning disabilities), wiggle seats, articulation stations, expression tools (recorders, tactile tools) to name a few.
