Students for COVID-19 Relief in India

We are a group of University students in the UK who represent a collaborative effort between 8 universities including Cambridge, LSE, St Andrews, Imperial, Kings College London, Warwick, Cardiff and Loughborough across 14 student societies. Removed from the immediate danger of the crisis yet emotionally connected to it, we have the energy and resources to generate funds and have an impact.
India is shattering world records for COVID-19. The (official) daily COVID-19 case count is nearing 400,000. The death toll, 3500. Crematoriums and burial sites are overwhelmed, and workers there indicate the actual death toll may be much higher. The large population density is both accelerating the spread of COVID-19 and collapsing the underfunded healthcare system. Healthcare and frontline workers are grossly overworked. Millions of people, especially daily wage workers, are losing their livelihoods as a consequence of lockdowns, resource shortages, and deaths.
In a country with such a large population density, the public healthcare system is deteriorating rapidly. Medical supplies, especially oxygen tanks, are extremely scarce and are now selling in the black market for more than ten times their pre-pandemic costs. Cremation and burial sites too are facing massive shortages.
However, donating internationally and verifying organisations can be difficult. Hence, we wanted to provide accessible donations to personally verified organisations for students internationally. This fundraiser is a platform for international students to donate and be involved in helping the situation in India, in whichever way we can.
Since the situation in India is dire, we wish to benefit both medical interests as well as resources for the underprivileged. We have verified and made direct communication with two organisations working at the grassroot level. We aim to raise money for oxygen supply (Hemkunt Foundation) and essential services for the underprivileged (Goonj).
