These students are a part of our Peace Jam club, and have the goal to become leaders of social justice, committed to making positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world.
After hearing Nobel Peace Prize Winner Kailash Satyarthi speak at a Peace Jam conference this spring, our students have become motivated to initiate change in the world. News came out about the shut down of schools in Puerto Rico because of bureaucratic complications with contracts, and our students were outraged at the thought of children their age missing out on education opportunities.
The goal for our project is to visit Puerto Rico where we have a partnership with another school and create a documentary detailing the perspective of the students and the impact that these school closures will have on their lives. By giving students a voice we can share their message much more effectively, and spread awareness about the underlying political issues that remain at hand.
Funding will be used for the following:
- Travel expenses (airfare, vans)
- Lodging expenses
- Camera equipment (battery packs, SD cards, SD readers)
We are hoping to make the trip to Puerto Rico this June, and need funding as soon as possible to make it work. We are greatly appreciative of any help and support we can receive and know students and teachers in Puerto Rico share that sentiment. Donors will receive special thanks in our documentary.
