New Jersey Animal Save (NJASM) has worked incredibly hard with a team of activists that have traveled from all across the country to rescue hundreds of Kaporos survivors.
Kaporos with chickens is an event in which thousands of chickens are used for a ritual and afterwards are slaughtered and mostly discarded. Blood and feces fill the streets as chickens are forced to spend a week straight in incredibly confined crates until their throats are slit and their bodies are thrown in the garbage, sometimes even just lying near death or lifeless on the ground. Many birds end up dying in the crates before they are slaughtered, and their brothers and sisters have to spend their time in the crates surrounded by their dead bodies.
On September 15, the last day of Kaporos, our rescue team was given word by a Rabbi that we were allowed to take as many birds as we can from a truck of 2,500 chickens that were left over from the ritual. Our rescue team rushed to the site and liberated as many babies as we could, and brought them to an amazing activist’s house.
Hundreds of Kaporos survivors were in their back yard, and our team spent hours sorting through the babies to put them in the cars and transport
them to their forever homes. Two of our amazing activists spent over 15 hours driving survivors to a wonderful sanctuary, one car carried 110 birds that would all be going to another lovely
sanctuary who stepped up to adopt them.
Unfortunately, many birds are injured and ill and we will need funds for their care.
100% of the funds have been and will go
towards:
⁃ the medical care of the Kaporos survivors.
- costs of providing food, water, crates and
other items related to their immediate
needs.
⁃ donations to sanctuaries to assist them
with the expenses related to the survivors
long term care in their safe, forever homes.
Last year we rescued 89 birds; a far cry from this year's numbers.
