About two and a half years ago, our dad was diagnosed with Follicular Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma which is an incurable cancer. This is a slow progressing cancer that gave him much time to live a fairly normal life. This cancer doesn't need to be treated immediately so we were hopeful our dad wouldn't have to undergo any treatments for years. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2013 his elbow began to swell. You could notice a difference in the swelling practically every day. When he went to get it checked, we found out it had transformed into Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma which is a very fast progressing cancer. He immediately went into treatment and received chemo over a few months. After the first treatment the swelling in his arm had gone down about 90%. With such good news, we were optimistic that the treatment had worked and he would not need more treatment.
Within less than two months, the swelling came back to his elbow in full force, growing rapidly over three days. When he returned to the doctor they knew it wasn't good news. He will be undergoing a more intense treatment that will undoubtedly take him out of work once the sickness of the chemo hits. He will also be receiving a stem cell transplant which they know for certain will cause him to be bedridden for a long period of time.
Our mom will be the only one supporting herself and my dad. With house payments, medical bills and other expenses it's going to be very taxing on them. Fortunately, our jobs are flexible and will allow the three of us time to help out with taking him to appointments but financially we cannot support the needs of our parents on our own.
It is very hard for our family to ask other people for anything, we are givers, but we would like to put it out there to anyone who is willing to give our parents some help and donate whatever you can. These funds will be used strictly for my parents needs during this trying time.
Everyone's support has been incredible. We thank everyone for your thoughts, hugs and well wishes.
