Steve's War on Cancer; why me?

Donation protected
My loving husband, father of our 12 year old boy, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in July. He is a hard working man, and as many in our country, an hourly employee in a chain restaurant that doesn't offer health insurance. It is a struggle for us to make ends meet and so, opted not to pay the nearly $8000 a year it would have cost us to get the basics thinking that something bad...like getting cancer...would never happen to us.
Here we are, so far with a bill for $60,000 for just the surgery; he came home from that looking a little Frankensteinesque; the tumor is in his ear and the incision that was closed with staples ran from the top of his ear down around his neck and then to his shoulder.
At his post-op visit, we got the good news that the lymph nodes were negative and the bad, really bad news that because of the size of the tumor and the fact that it had invaded into the temporal bone of the skull, he is a T4...that's a stage 4.
That means almost two months, five days a week of radiation, then maybe chemo after that. We don't know yet.
What we do know is that he hasn't been able to work since the end of July and won't be able to during the radiation. Not only is there no health insurance, but there is no disability either; it was denied.
We were denied for financial assistance at the hospital and are appealing that decision.
We were able to get food stamps for a few months, some help.
I teach preschool part time at minimum wage, also without benefits. I can't increase my hours because he needs me at home.
Our situation is dire and urgent. Like our decision about the health insurance, because we thought we'd never need it, we thought we'd be ok living paycheck to paycheck...no real choice about that. As it turns out, we were wrong there too and are in a position where we must ask for help. Any amount will be more appreciated than we could ever acknowledge. Thank you.
