The '19/'20 Stedman Elementary PTA fundraising campaign: At Stedman Elementary, we build community. We would like to invite you to join us in those efforts.
Stedman Elementary (a Denver Public School) is a thriving and diverse neighborhood school in North Park Hill in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1924, Stedman has a rich history of representing many ethnicities, languages, faiths, and socioeconomic backgrounds with great pride. We are committed to excellence in our instruction and community-building to make sure that all students achieve personal and academic success. Our school enjoys the tremendous benefits that come with having a diverse student population. It is one of our most prized qualities as a school community!
With 60% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch (indicating the number of families with fewer financial resources), we have an increased need for support. Colorado is ranked 40th in school funding. Smaller schools, like ours, feel these realities most acutely. While we are optimistic about our trajectory and have seen our student population grown from 186 to 260 in just two years, our funding is still insufficient.
“When I walked into Stedman and saw white, African American, and Latino children,” says principal, Michael Atkins (watch Michael's interview on the Today Show ), “I knew this was my opportunity to shift the experience and to diversify in a different capacity; to drive community in a way that recognizes and celebrates differences. Thank you for investing in Stedman’s incredible students and teachers.”
As the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we believe in Stedman’s promise and celebrate the ways donors can make such a meaningful difference in the Stedman community. Donations in the past we have been able to give students experiences they would otherwise not be able to have. These efforts include things like field trips for every grade level, bringing art and science days to the school and staff, and a variety of after school clubs like yoga, geography, choir, and improv!
We have also been able to provide direct support to teachers for individual needs such as upgraded gym supplies, classroom supportive tools like headphones and scholastic news subscriptions, and have been able to provide crucial staff support such as desperately needed paraprofessionals in the classrooms and even a part-time librarian tech for our newly made-over library. With your support, we will continue to give new experiences to our students and expand on all our hard work!
How can you lend a hand? The money raised this year will help to fund:
- Urgent support-staff needs
- Field trips and enrichment opportunities for all students
- School-wide science and art education
