As a friend of Kelly and Steve Stanton, I have created this GoFundMe account in an effort to raise money to help them with the growing medical costs their family is facing.
JACOB:
In October 2017, Jacob (24) was diagnosed with a very rare and serious disease (fewer than 20 patients in the US have it) called Collagenous Gastritis (CG). Collagenous Gastritis primarily affects the digestive system. CG causes fatigue, nausea, digestive issues, and extreme chest, stomach, and back pain. Jacob has been suffering increasingly with these symptoms for many years, with a major flare up this past September.
MUSC confirmed Jacob's CG diagnosis in November but told him that they did not have the expertise to treat him there. He was told that he needed to go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to be treated by the doctor who specializes in and has the most experience with the disease. Jacob's first appointment at the Mayo Clinic is on February 25, 2018 and he will need to stay for 7 days.
*The course and costs of the actual medical treatment is not yet known, but we do know that Kelly and Jacob need funds to fly to and from Minnesota, to stay in a hotel for 7 nights, and meals while they are there.*
In addition to Jacob's illness, the Stantons are dealing with some other medical issues and expenses.
As many of you know, Steve recently had ankle reconstruction surgery and was out of work (and income) for 5 months. He is back at work but still experiencing intense pain and side effects.
KELLY:
Kelly suffers from extreme fatigue, joint pain, and many neurological symptoms. She has been suffering for many years with little relief from treatments by local doctors. She has recently become a patient of a specialized integrated doctor in Winston Salem, NC who is doing many tests, some of which are very pricey and not covered by insurance. This first round of tests will cost at least $1000 out of pocket.
Although they each do so much to help others every day, the Stantons are VERY reluctant to ask for help for themselves, so I have taken it on myself to let all the people who love them and support them know what is going on and HOW they can HELP!
As we find out the costs of the various treatments and the frequency of the travel costs, I will update the page to reflect their needs.
