St Peters Church, Tollerton - Tower Fund

St Peters is a Grade 2 listed church found in the old part of the village of Tollerton, Nottinghamshire. Like many old buildings its showing its age and requires a major renovation.
A survey conducted on the church highlighted specific problems due to rain and wind erosion on the stonework at the top of the tower. Damage to the parapet at the top of the tower needs rebuilding urgently to make sure masonry doesn’t fall onto the path to the church or into the parish graveyard. The wind and rain has also taken its toll on the tower’s six wooden windows which also need repairing, with new mesh added to keep birds from flying into the tower and getting stuck inside. Also an asbestos flue linked to the church boiler needs to be removed and internally floorboards and a wooden ladder need replacing.
The total cost of this project is currently £40,000.
Over the past 2 years this church (led by Church Warden Norma Smith) has pursued many opportunities to fund this work, we have had concerts in church, organised fund raising events, sought gifts and pledges from church members and also applied for grants. To date we have secured £35,000.
But in this period the cost of the project has risen considerably and many grants -being time limited - risk being lost if we don't start the project early next year.
Had Covid-19 not happened this year, we would have been confident in reaching the total figure. But with the church closed for a long period and most fund raising events curtailed this year, we face a challenging period.
Although a small church, St Peters is an extremely pretty one, with a long history of christian worship in the village.
Rebuilding the Tower will allow :-
Continued christian worship in a safe environment
The church to continue to provide a venue for weddings, christenings and funerals.
The church to continue to provide a venue for small concerts.
The church to continue to be open for visitors interested in historic churches.
