St Kilda Mangroves: Citizen Advocacy and Action
Dear friends,
I am an estuarine ecologist, who has been advocating for the clean up (as per the government issued EPA Clean Up Order) of the waste brine pollution that is impacting the St Kilda Mangroves and coastal saltmarshes. Various members of the community, along with a number of organisations, have been involved in this advocacy for more than a year.
Unfortunately, despite extensive community and media pressure, it appears that not a single tonne of the estimated up to 100,000 tonnes of salt involved in the pollution event has been removed from the ponds subject to the Clean Up Order.
To date, all of this advocacy work has been done out of the personal pockets of the impacted communities, however, I believe it is time to ramp up the awareness-raising work and help fund transparent citizen science and practical community-driven clean up of the impacts. To do this, there is a need for additional funding.
Many people who are not directly impacted by the pollution event have asked me what they can do to help - This is it, please donate. Every dollar will help.
