Spreading Smiles for Seniors This Christmas: Giving back to our local elderly friends
Last year, a group of young women in East Providence came together to spread some holiday cheer at a local nursing home. We hosted a breakfast - sharing stories and getting to know the men and women who lived there over muffins and coffee. Many of the residents had fascinating histories. Some had served time in the military. Others had spent their lives teaching or working in hospitals. Almost all of them had at least a few funny stories to share.
After breakfast, we went through each floor of the building, handing out Christmas presents to each and every soul. This was, perhaps, the most joyous part of the day. Many residents were thrilled to have a little something to unwrap. Whether it was a soft blanket or a book of word puzzles - those who could express gratitude did so with glee. As each bag was opened, we could see the child in all of these seniors return. It was a gift for all who lived there, but also for everyone taking part.
The holidays are a time for giving, and for spending time with the ones we love. But many of our elderly friends don’t have that option anymore. Many of them need to be cared for in a nursing home. Some do not always feel “at home”, and long for more time with family and friends. This is something that we want to bring back into their lives, on one very special day of the year.
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and we would love it if you could help us spread some of that holiday cheer for a second year. Your donation will help us purchase food to host a brunch at a local nursing home in which residents and volunteers will eat together and spend time getting to know each other. Funds will also go towards purchasing over 100 gifts which will be personally handed out to each resident. Your help in celebrating the seniors in our community means more than you know, and is appreciated beyond any other gift we could receive this year.
