Prom is a quintessential high school milestone that countless students look forward to throughout their high school career. However, this experience isn't a given for all students due to financial barriers.
John O'Connell High School is a low-income, urban, public school, located in the Mission District of San Francisco. Our senior class council has single-handedly raised the money for their prom, making the cost of a single ticket for prom upwards of $80.00 to make-up the cost of the venue.
According to SFUSD, over 64% of our student population is low-income or socio-economically disadvantaged. This means that many families cannot afford the cost of prom for their students. We are trying to raise money to supplement the cost of or pay for deserving student's prom tickets.
Students have been writing essays about why they need help paying for the cost of prom. Your donation will help create priceless high school memories for our students.

"I come from a poor household, in which we do not get a whole bunch of income. so I was wondering if you could help me afford a ticket to prom so I am able to go. I know that asking my mom would stress her out and I do not want to do that to her. I would appreciate any help that you can give me to participate in this event." -'OC Junior
"I'm writing this because I want to go to prom with my friends and create memories on our last year of high school, but there's only one problem and that is I cant afford buying the ticket. At first I didn't want to go because I knew my parents wouldn't want to buy my ticket and because they didn't know what was prom, also cause I need to buy a dress which is also expensive. But after I found that you could help me out on buying the tickets, I'm more excited and thankful to go to prom with my best friend. Anyways Thank you so much! "At first I didn’t believe that I could go to prom because at the moment I’m having money issues. My dad would always be the one to get me the things I needed but recently I’ve gotten into a fight with him. I’m not talking to him at all at the moment wand to make matters, I have no support from him financially. I haven’t seen him or talked to him for almost a month now. I had a job at the Academy of Sciences, but I recently quit because I couldn’t take all the stress of senior defense and balancing my job. They wanted me to come into work and stay there until late in the night. They also paid me very little, not enough to even support my needs or buy a ticket for prom. I live with my mom at the moment because I have no where else to go. So I couldn’t go to work and arrive home at 10 pm. I wouldn’t have time to do my homework at all and I felt as if my manager didn’t really care for that. My mom is helping me, but she’s also struggling with money because she has a lot of bills to pay. She’s buying my prom dress so she is unable to buy my ticket. So it’d be a big help if I could get this scholarship. I want to go to prom to experience it with my friends that I’ll be leaving this year. I don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity.
